Meeting and communal spaces also pay homage to the playlists, albums, and podcasts that draw both creators and listeners to Spotify. Each meeting room bears a name with a corresponding Spotify listing, chosen by local teams in that office to represent their city or community. In Toronto, your meeting might be in The Weeknd, named after the Toronto native; in Berlin, Techno Bunker, named for a Spotify playlist spotlighting music visitors might find in one of the city’s many nightclubs. We believe considering a broader range of usability needs improves the experience for everyone. We’ve made sure that new features work with assistive technologies, like screen readers, meet contrast requirements, and are usable in keyboard-only scenarios.

Lastly, the Spotify app and website have limited customization options. Users have limited options to customize the look and feel of the app and website, such as changing the background or color scheme. There are lots of teams working on the main Spotify app, so there’s a big need for shared mobile components and patterns.

In total, the project encompassed more than 1 million square feet of office space, with over 300 works of art, many of them created by local artists and curated by local teams. My first year of heading up design ops at Spotify is nearly complete. It’s been a hell of a year figuring what this discipline means and how it works at a unique company like ours. We have designers working across multiple locations, for multiple audiences, across multiple platforms.
Invisible made Visible: The Value of Designing Tools for Internal Teams
When last we spoke, we took you on a very special behind-the-files stroll through the development of the new brand for Spotify Design. Today, we’re embarking on the sequel to that stroll, so you can see how we applied the new brand to the new Spotify.Design website. He presented ideas that used a variety of strong, extensible elements, and we gravitated most toward the ones that added an analog vibe to our primarily digital experience.
This way, we could take advantage of our platform strengths, like larger screen sizes and various inputs (mouse and keyboard), while fitting into a larger system. Historically, Spotify’s personalization efforts happened across playlists and surfaces like Home and Search. But over time we utilized new technologies to drive more opportunities for personalization. This started from a Hack Week project back in the day to become Discover Weekly, our first successful algorithmically driven playlist. It then gave way to Blend, which was designed for a more social listening experience.

These are things everyone should use—it’s what makes Spotify look like Spotify. Using Encore Foundation is the minimum bar for every Spotify product. John Adams’s fourth full-length opera was first performed in San Francisco in 2017. She reveals there was at least a two week process of bringing in pictures and brainstorming ideas, including a mold with a flat top, but nothing jumped out.
Get our big stories about Hollywood, film, television, music, arts, culture and more right in your inbox as soon as they publish. Fans have also latched onto a line in “Fortnight,” which features Post Malone, as proof that Alwyn wasn’t always faithful to Swift. The surprise double album was released in two parts on April 19, giving exuberant Swifties plenty of material to analyze — including multiple celebrity call-outs. Taylor Swift didn’t hold back on calling everyone out on her newest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” and the reactions are rolling in. Spotify reiterated its belief yesterday that Apple is aiming to “punish developers with new fees” as part of its rules to use an alternative payment method in the EU.
This rich mixture just about hangs together musically and dramatically, with only a few loose ends. Whatever the eventual fate of Girls of the Golden West in the opera houses of the world, it now has a definitive recording. The 2024 NFL Draft has wrapped -- but the team-building process continues with the signing of undrafted rookie free agents.
Thank you for following along — it’s been a pleasure to share the journey with you. From Albin Holmqvist to Stink Studios to our internal partners, we had so many different vats of valuable knowledge to dip into during this process. We think it’s crucial to establish these partnerships before you begin working, so you feel confident that you can take on any challenge that flies at you. And we found that collecting ideas and feedback asynchronously was actually more fruitful than the classical method of gathering people together to speak out loud. Perhaps because it’s easier to formulate your thoughts without the pressure of others sitting there and watching you formulate said thoughts.
Special shout-out to all our Principal-level designers for contributing to this work, and to Marina Posniak, Heiko Winter, Shamik Ray, and Juli Sombat for this post. It’s easy to say that Spotify should feel “human” and “relevant”, but what does that actually look like? The examples were super useful, and we would have benefited from having even more.
If recommendations are a math problem, then resonance is a design problem. Designing from a more cross-platform perspective has helped Encore make Spotify’s experiences feel both coherent and familiar, while preserving platform-specific interactions and details. Spotify designers can optimize for their unique platform, such as considering different screen sizes or input types, while still aligning with Encore. With multiple platforms, we have to keep track of many requirements and limitations, which can get tricky. Encore’s role is to absorb this pain, rather than creating complexity for product teams or our customers.
And now that it’s open, they’re realizing even more ways to make it attractive and accessible to creators well into the future. Going forward, when you open Spotify, you’ll still see a bunch of album and playlist covers at the top. But underneath, you might see an autoplaying video podcast, which you can jump into with a tap. Or you might see a big, Instagram-style photo meant to tell you a little more about a playlist you might like. The mobile app and website have different designs and functionality tailored to different devices, contexts, and use cases.
Designify combines the world's most advanced visual AIs into one simple tool. Remove backgrounds from any image in high quality, add realistic shadows and enhance colors to create beautiful designs using artificial intelligence. Disabling and enabling play controls in response to restricted actions for Spotify Free may result in a confusing experience for the user. For example, the user may not understand why the skip back option has been disabled. Rather than explaining these restrictions to the user or creating a frustrating UX, we recommended you don't provide play controls. If you use any Spotify metadata (including artist, album and track names, album artwork and audio playback) it must always link back to the Spotify Service.
Apple are entitled to some sort of fee, and it should be substantial for the effort they’ve put into building iOS and the iPhone, without which Spotify wouldn’t exist. What I would say is that there needs to be a negotiation between the tech industry and the EU over the amount charged, but it’s acceptable for Apple to seek a fee. But, I’m absolutely sure Spotify will not be happy even then, because they’re that sort of company. Maybe the US government should take more of an interest and speak to the EU about their practices and threaten to do the same with EU companies.
